Ranking Oxidant Sensitiveness: A Guide for Synthetic Utility

Common oxidants used in chemical synthesis, including newly developed perruthenates, were evaluated in the context of understanding (and better appreciating) the sensitiveness and associated potential hazards of these reagents. Analysis using sealed cell differential scanning calorimetry (scDSC) facilitated Yoshida correlations, which were compared to impact sensitiveness and electrostatic discharge experiments (ESD), that enabled sensitiveness ranking. Methyltriphenylphoshonium perruthenate (MTP3, 8 ), isoamyltriphenylphosphonium perruthenate (ATP3, 7 ) and tetraphenylphosphonium perruthenate (TP3, 9 ) were found to be the most sensitive followed by 2-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX, 2 ) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO, 10 ), whereas the most benign were observed to be Oxone ( 12 ), manganese dioxide (MnO₂, 13 ), and N-bromosuccinimide (NBS, 17 ).     

Anion‐Mediated Effects on the Size and Mechanical Properties of Enzymatically Crosslinked Suckerin Hydrogels

The suckerin family of proteins, identified from the squid sucker ring teeth assembly, offers unique mechanical properties and potential advantages over other natural biomaterials. In this study, a small suckerin isoform, suckerin‐12, is used to create enzymatically crosslinked, macro‐scale hydrogels. Upon exposure to specific salt conditions, suckerin‐12 hydrogels contracted into a condensed state where mechanical properties are found to be modulated by the salt anion present. The rate of contraction is found to correlate well with the kosmotropic arm of the Hofmeister anion series. However, the observed changes in hydrogel mechanical properties are better explained by the ability of the salt to neutralize charges in suckerin‐12 by deprotonization or charge screening. Thus, by altering the anions in the condensing salt solution, it is possible to tune the mechanical properties of suckerin‐12 hydrogels. The potential for suckerins to add new properties to materials based on naturally‐derived proteins is highlighted.

Bifurcation analysis of periodic orbits of a non-smooth Jeffcott rotor model

We investigate complex dynamics occurring in a non-smooth model of a Jeffcott rotor with a bearing clearance. A bifurcation analysis of the rotor system is carried out by means of the software TC-HAT [25], a toolbox of AUTO 97 [6] allowing path-following and detection of bifurcations of periodic trajectories of non-smooth dynamical systems. The study reveals a rich variety of dynamics, which includes grazing-induced fold and period-doubling bifurcations, as well as hysteresis loops produced by a cusp singularity. Furthermore, an analytical expression predicting grazing incidences is derived.     

A Critique of Baker’s Constitution View

The paper presents, motivates, critiques, and proposes revisions to Baker’s Constitution View, which includes her definitions of constitution, derivative features, and numerical sameness. The paper argues that Baker should add a mereological clause to her definition of constitution in order to avoid various counterexamples.
